Data from: Thermal tolerance, performance, and preference in juvenile mangrove whiprays

Data presented in this dataset were collected as part of a project to characterise the thermal niche of juvenile mangrove whiprays (Urogymnus granulatus) within Pioneer Bay (Orpheus Island, Queensland). Thermal niche was characterised by quantifying thermal tolerance, performance, and preference using controlled laboratory experiments at Orpheus Island Research Station and a bio-telemetry monitoring study within Pioneer Bay. Thermal tolerance was quantified with standard critical thermal methodology for fishes, and thermal performance was quantified by measuring oxygen uptake rates at two acclimation temperatures. Thermal preference was quantified using electivity analysis informed by environmental temperature data collected from data loggers across Pioneer Bay and body temperature data collected from data loggers deployed on wild mangrove whiprays.

This dataset consists of:

  • Seven .csv files containing environmental data from Pioneer Bay and physiological data from mangrove whiprays (also available in open document format .ods)
  • One metadata .txt file containing descriptions of individual .csv files including column headings.

Ethical approval to collect data presented herein was received from the James Cook University Animal Ethics Committee (A2463). Permission to collect, possess, and transport whiprays and whipray tissues was obtained from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (permit G15/39987.1).
